The Spanish construction company FCC has completed in Dublin the first work in the world that combines BIM and blockchain, two buildings on the Grangegorman University campus. To achieve this, a platform has been created that combines both solutions with the aim of improving the productivity of the company and guaranteeing excellence in processes and results through the automation of quality control and management methods on site.

The use of the BIM methodology is not yet mandatory to be awarded public work in Spain, but its implementation is progressing and there are already some administrations that require it for certain types of projects. So far this year, 161 tenders have been published for a total of 148 million euros that include this requirement, according to the CBIM Observatory of the Ministry of Transport. As we can see, BIM becomes, day by day, a crucial methodology for the development of projects in the construction sector and therefore we should not overlook it.

It is true that both BIM and “blockchain”, a distributed and secure database thanks to the encryption of its components, can be used separately and that there is already a lot of automation in the sector. However, by combining the qualities provided by the “blockchain” and BIM, the project gains in traceability and automation, ensuring quality, the agility of the purchasing, monitoring and control processes, among many other things.

With a budget of 220 million, this first work to be carried out with both innovative methodologies has received the “Breeam” sustainable construction certification.
