SMERF: Streamable Memory Efficient Radiance Fields

Google Research is taking a revolutionary turn in mapping with Streamable Memory Efficient Radiance Fields, or simply SMERF. Evolving from Google’s previous generation technology, Memory Efficient Radiance Fields (MERF), SMERF maintains the fundamental simplicity and clarity of MERF while successfully tackling challenges in rendering large and complex scenes.

At the core of SMERF’s success is a unique hierarchical model partitioning approach that divides scenes into smaller segments. This dynamic method loads and processes only the segments you are viewing as you navigate through the virtual environment. This not only conserves memory effectively but also ensures a smooth and uninterrupted experience on any device.

The key to SMERF’s success lies in a method called Deferred Appearance Network Partitioning. This method separates the visual appearance (color, texture) and geometry (shape, depth), providing a more focused and efficient computation.

In addition, SMERF adopts a feature gating technique to enhance the efficiency of the student model. This technique allows the model to focus on the most crucial features for rendering, optimizing both the learning and rendering processes.

While this new technology can produce high-fidelity images at Zip-NeRF quality, it operates three times faster than other technologies like Snap’s Mobile R2L.

In conclusion, SMERF makes a significant innovation in map engineering for real-time exploration of large scenes with Streamable Memory Efficient Radiance Fields technology. We are eager to see how Google will implement this technology in the future.
